Two future California Indian casinos and one existing casino have had significant developments this month.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s going on.
Mechoopda Casino
Folks in and around Chico can expect to have a new gambling option by summer 2024.
That’s according to a sign near the tent that will house the temporary Mechoopda Casino south of Chico. Construction on the temporary casino began last May, and the sign says: Mechoopda Casino Coming Soon! Summer 2024.
The Mechoopda Indian Tribe’s permanent casino, which will feature 500 slots, 10 table games, and 42,000 square feet of gaming space, will begin construction at a later undetermined date.
This temporary casino, which is located on the south bank of Clear Creek off Openshaw Road, will be housed by a heavy-duty, industrial-grade white tent with metal support beams. It’s still unknown how many games and what types it will offer, as well as what other amenities it may provide.
The sign near the temporary casino has three logos on it: the Mechoopda Indian Tribe, Palace Hospitality (run by the Tachi Yokut Tribe, which owns Tachi Palace Casino Resort), and the construction company Swinerton.

The new entrance adds 30,000 square feet of gaming space. The renovation also includes a new Cashier Cage and Premiere Club located at the new front entrance.
The expansion on the third floor has allowed for more slot machines, a new high-limit room, a food court, and two bars.
Coyote Grille and Koy’ Wae’ Lounge have been renovated, too.

Chicken Ranch Casino Resort
The final steel beam was placed on the new Chicken Ranch Casino Resort last week. That means the steel framework phase on construction of the nine-story complex is complete.
The Chicken Ranch Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians currently owns the Chicken Ranch Casino, which features 600 slot machines, nine table games, and a 900-seat bingo hall. The new casino resort is south down the hill from the existing casino. It will feature more games and gaming space, plus a nine-story hotel and conference center.
Construction is expected to conclude in 2024.
“The middle of March of 2024 is our planned opening date, and we might even be able to pick up some days and weeks, and open a little earlier,” Tribal Chair Lloyd Mathiesen told MyMotherLode.com. “But right now, we are planning for March of 2024.”
