One of the northernmost California Indian casinos has broken ground on a resort expansion it hopes to finish by 2024.

The Karuk Tribe began construction last Friday on a hotel that will be attached to Rain Rock Casino, the only casino in Siskiyou County. The new resort in Yreka, California, will have 80 rooms, a luxury pool, 12 VIP cabins, and a convention center.

“For them to expand on this just means more of a value for the city of Yreka,” Yreka Mayor Duane Kegg told KDRV at the groundbreaking ceremony. “Bringing in more people, more ideas, more creative things to bring to the city of Yreka. Bringing people that would not normally stop in Yreka now are stopping in Yreka, so it’s huge all the way around.”

Rain Rock Casino Details

Drawing bettors from both Northern California and southern Oregon, Rain Rock Casino sits 99 miles north of Redding. It currently offers 349 slot machines, eight table games, and 36,000 square feet of gaming space. Because the Karuk Tribe’s casino has fewer than 350 slot machines, it is considered a limited-gaming tribe. As a result, it receives $1.1 million annually from the Revenue Sharing Trust Fund, which was created to share the revenue from California’s top gaming tribes.

There are no current plans to expand Red Rock Casino’s offerings beyond 349 slot machines. Its tribal-state compact allows for up to 1,500.

“Building this hotel is going to be an opportunity to have people come stay, bring their families,” Karuk Tribe Chairman Buster Attebery told KDRV. “The idea of having 12 cottages is a new idea and will make rain rock casino more of a destination resort.”

Rain Rock Casino opened in February 2018. It cost $35 million to build. Beyond its gaming floor, it also features two restaurants, a bar, and an entertainment stage. Its address is 777 Casino Way, Yreka, CA 96097.

The Karuk Tribe is a federally recognized tribe of about 4,800 people, mostly residing in Siskiyou and Humboldt Counties.
