Real-money sports betting is not yet legal in California. Fliff, however, a free promotional sweepstakes sportsbook, is. And especially with Prop 27 looking poised to fail, Fliff has a chance to be huge in California.
But can it actually take the place of betting at a traditional sportsbook?
Can Fliff give sports bettors the same experience they’d get with a real-money sports betting app like DraftKings or BetMGM?
We give you our answer below.

Play for Fun and Play for Cash With Fliff
Fliff is not your traditional sports betting app. Users don’t have to load any payment information. Meanwhile, Fliff Coins are awarded every two hours to all users. So no matter how many bad beats you have to experience, you will get new currency to make more. Fliff Coins are the more common app currency, and they can only be used on Fliff picks.
Fliff Cash, on the other hand, can be redeemed for real cash prizes once you’ve accumulated enough. The question is, can this model bring in customers that are hoping to make big bucks using one of the major sports betting operators?
The answer depends on how you plan on using it.
Fliff is leading the way by turning sports betting into a social game. Integrating promotional plays and loyalty rewards enhances the social experience and offers sports fans the opportunity to earn and win prizes.
Essentially, this is what we do on a daily basis. Whether it is at a family cookout or in your group chat with your college buddies, we are constantly making picks and predictions on our favorite teams. This is just putting your money where your mouth is, without actual money.

How Fliff Compares With the Major Online Sports Betting Sites
If you log on to the Fliff app, you might be surprised how much it feels like a typical sports betting app. You can make picks on a wide variety of sports. Of course, you have your usuals like NFL, college football, and MLB.
But you can also find odds on soccer and tennis matchups around the world, just as you would on any of the top US sports betting sites like FanDuel California and DraftKings California. The main difference in this area is Fliff doesn’t offer futures odds, so you can only make picks on lines from matchups happening that day or week.
Fliff also lists competitive odds from game to game. For example, I compared the odds Fliff has listed for this weekend’s matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
NFL Week 3: Los Angeles Chargers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Moneyline Odds
Team | Fliff | FanDuel | BetMGM | DraftKings | Caesars Sportsbook |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Los Angeles Chargers | -330 | -295 | -300 | -305 | -335 |
Jacksonville Jaguars | +255 | +240 | +230 | +255 | +260 |
Odds listed as of Sep. 22, 2022.
While the moneyline odds are not exactly the same, they are in a reasonable range of each other. That includes Fliff. When you look at the spread, everything lines up. The four major sportsbooks have the Chargers as 7-point favorites, and so does Fliff. The Over/Under for total points is basically the same across the board at 47 points. The lone outlier is FanDuel, where it is at 47.5.
Fliff also allows you to place live picks, build parlays, and take advantage of odds boosts. You can also dive into each game to make picks on some player and team props.

Two things that significantly differ from the more well-known sports betting sites stood out to me.
First, Fliff does not let you make any futures picks. So not picks on a Super Bowl winner or who you think will win the College Football Playoff. Futures betting is huge in the gambling world. I don’t think it is something that would turn people away completely, but it takes some of the “out-in-the-distance” fun out of it.
Second, you can make picks on player props for college games. In some states, like Arizona, you cannot make bets on a college athlete’s performance in games. So the option is not even made available to you in markets where there are restrictions on college betting.

Overall Takeaway
Fliff is available for download for Apple and Android devices. The Fliff app is available in California right now. It’s also available in 40 other states and Washington, D.C. Players in Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, and South Carolina can use the platform but can’t participate in sweepstakes promotions.
So while the debate about sports betting in California rages on, Fliff can gain a significant foothold in the gaming market. Whether the site will maintain that momentum if mobile sports wagering goes live remains to be seen. But the folks at Fliff have California all to themselves for now.
